Sadness is an emotion everyone goes through at some point in their life. It is not something that is bad per se but there is that danger that it can lead to depression. And depression itself is a concern that needs to be addressed.
To say the least, depression is an alarming state in itself since usually, the person having this feeling would be in a “dark state” which is akin to being stuck in a dark tunnel with no light and no hope of getting out of it. In worse cases, it may lead to suicide.
As such, treating depression is not an easy task and would take more than just cheering a person up. But there are ways to somehow address which may hopefully at least alleviate it.
1. Practice mindfulness
A depressed mind tends to mull over all that is wrong and worries unnecessarily about all the negative possibilities that may happen in the future. Thus, mindfulness helps focus on the present moment and is a skill that needs to be practiced. Practice on engaging your senses in the moment as it helps leave less time for worry.
2. Listen to upbeat music
Music has always been considered as therapeutic. It wouldn’t hurt listen to an upbeat tune to help improve your mood.
3. Have some touch therapy
Touch therapies such as acupuncture, acupressure, massage, and reflexology can help overcome depression according to some studies. At the same time, this will help you feel more relaxed and at ease, helping you worry those troubles away.
4. Have some Omega 3 in your diet
Research has shown that depressed people often lack a fatty acid known as EPA. Thus having Omega-3 rich foods such as walnuts, salmon, or tuna can help fill that gap. Not to mention, Omega-3 fatty acids can lower cholesterol and improve cardiovascular health as well.
5. Stop the negativity
Depressed people tend to see the world in a negative way. Try not to be pessimistic when you are feeling low. You can acknowledge the thoughts but you don’t have to give in to them.
6. Bide time
You must accept that your mental state is not entirely balanced but remind yourself also that you will never always feel this way. Be patient and do your best to look after yourself in the meantime and trust that these things shall pass.
7. Distract yourself
If possible, do your best to distract yourself from over thinking. You can play with your pets, go out, do some hobbies…do anything that takes your mind off your fears and worries. Keeping busy is an effective way to overcome depression.
8. Cognitive therapy
Cognitive therapy can be extremely useful in counteracting depression and is based on the principle that certain ways of thinking can trigger certain health problems, such as depression. It can thus help change your ways of thinking to avoid these ideas as well as help your thought patterns to be more realistic and helpful.
9. Write a journal
Get a journal where you can freely write down fears and worries. Or you can write there about the good things that happened to you that day. Either way, having an outlet can be therapeutic as it soothes and eases your mind off things.
10. Connect with friends
Isolating oneself from others may seem a good idea but there should be a period for it and then go out there again. This can have a huge positive effect on your mood.
11. Learn to forgive
When we hold a grudge, we are the ones that feel the anger and it brings about emotional and mental stress. Try not to allow that grief to continue and find a way to forgive – they are not worthy of your time and there are better things ahead that you can do.sion,
Regular exercise has benefits for helping to overcome depression. Exercise releases endorphins which improve natural immunity and improve mood.
13. Don’t give up
Depression can make you want to hide away from the world and disappear. It’s okay to take some time out but give yourself a time limit and then do something productive to improve your mood. There can be a wonderful life beyond depression. Remember to hang on and keep the faith.
