Life can get pretty stressful, and for a lot of us, this comes from hours of the same routine at work, preparing for project presentations, writing endless amounts of pages worth of research, and even long nights of studying and cramming for exams. From being doctors and nurses who work overtime tending to their patients and saving lives, to a student just trying to get by to finish the semester, we all have our daily struggles and we all are looking for some time to release. We all deserve a little rest and relaxation from time to time, so here are five activities you can do to just let go and put all your worries aside!
1 – Go to the Beach
Living on an island, the beach is your playground! Put on your board shorts or your favorite bikini that has been sitting in the back of your closet, grab some friends, and soak up some sun. Jam some of your favorite tunes and enjoy that beautiful ocean breeze. Don’t want to get a sunburn or it’s just way too hot out? No problem! Enjoy the sunset and take a dip in the cool waters as night begins to fall. Now although the beach is a lot of fun, make sure to follow all safety precautions when you’re out there. Do try to stay in well lit areas at night and make sure you are in view of others. Avoid moving into deep waters and be aware of possible currents. The beach can be a great getaway, but safety is always #1.
2 – Catch Some Z’s
Nothing feels better than some well-needed rest. Not feeling well? Go home and take a nap. Tired from a long day? Throw your stuff to the side and hit the sheets. Just flat out bored and have nothing else to do? Lay down, close your eyes, and drift away to la la land. Sleeping helps your brain recharge and you’ll wake up refreshed and ready to take on the world. Take advantage of your days off and use that time and sleep in because you need your beauty rest and no one has the right to bother you on your day off! Unless of course you let them or if it’s an emergency. Besides that, make like a horse and hit the hay!
3 – Surround Yourself with Loved Ones
Sometimes we get so busy with work or school that we forget to make time for the people around us. Take some time off and spend it with your family or friends. If everyone’s schedules fit, reserve one weekend to stroll around and embrace the beauty that the island and nature has to offer. Prepare a homemade meal and have a picnic while you’re at it at one of the national parks or at the beach you already thought of go to. Plan a vacation in advance to visit your relatives who live abroad. No matter what you decide to do, just remember that in life you must expect the unexpected, so take every opportunity you can to spend time with those that matter the most to you, whether it be for a few hours or a few weeks. It’ll make all the difference.
4 – Get Active!
For some people, working out or doing physical activities is their stress reliever, and it can work for others too. Go to the gym or take some fitness classes. Go for a walk, a jog, or a run. By getting some exercise, your body naturally releases mood-boosting endorphins and even helps you relax, preparing your body for better sleep. It’s a win-win situation because not only will it benefit you by giving you the opportunity to exert stress, but you get the added bonus of keeping your body and your mind healthy. So put on your sweatpants and get on out there!
5 – Put On Some Music
Research shows that music can actually have a positive impact on your life and ultimately reduce stress. Everyone has their personal preferences and that’s totally fine. From the soothing sounds of classical Jazz to the energy-pumping beats of EDM, music can be your escape. Try opening your mind to the endless opportunities and explore through the variety of genres. You’ll be surprised at a whole new world created in the back of your mind that blocks out the all the negative vibes in life. If possible, make that escape a reality and buy tickets to a concert of your favorite band or artist. Attend a music festival whether close to home or abroad, whichever you have the means for.
This is where we come in. Going onto five years, the Electric Island Festival has been striving to be that escape through music, giving both locals and visitors of Guam the opportunity to leave their worries behind and just enjoy great music and great vibes. We’re so glad that we also get to spread our wings this year and bring this experience to our neighboring friends and family on the island of Saipan for the first time.
Aside from that, no matter what you choose to do, always remember that we shouldn’t push ourselves too hard. Strive to be and do the best you can, but know your limits. We all deserve a chance to take a break once in a while. Take the time to be with the people you love and reconnect with those you haven’t seen in days, months, even years. Take care of your body, take one step at a time, and your life will be rewarded both physically and mentally.
